Homemade Donuts

When I was still living in Davao, I would often go to Julies Bakeshoppe in the afternoon to buy hot donut (doughnut), pilipit or binangkal.  My co-workers would tease me because my bag is full of these food.  Well, what can I do?  Eating these three is happiness to me. Anyway, a couple of months ago I challenged myself again.  Here I will share to you my first attempt to make donuts (and a pilipit…I was able to make ONE pilipit only but I promise you I will make more pilipit next time and binangkal too).  I followed the recipe of Ms. Connie here.

Like making bread you need all-purpose flour, yeast, milk, butter, egg, sugar, warm water, salt and oil for frying (too bad I wasn’t able to take pictures while making it, I got so engrossed that it was a little late when I remembered the camera).

I first mixed the yeast and warm water and let it stand for around 10 minutes until it became frothy.  Then I put the rest of the ingredients (except the oil) in a large bowl. I poured in the yeast mixture and mixed it until I was able to form the dough into a ball.  I placed the dough in a bowl and covered it with a kitchen towel.  I let it rise for a couple of hours until double in size.

When it had double in size, I removed it from the bowl and rolled the dough in a floured table with a rolling pin.  Because I didn’t have a donut cutter, I used the cookie cutter and the icing decorating tip (the back part) to create a hole.

Then I fried the donuts in hot oil until it turned golden brown on both sides (note: do not overcrowd when frying).  I used paper towel to remove the oil. I then sprinkled powdered sugar on top.
